Q: How long is the hospital stay after a prostatectomy?
Just trying to compare the allowed hospital stay with, say, a mastectomy.
The ones who sit over the medical providers are men, and they decide and tell the medical profession how many hours they may stay recovering from anesthesia and surgery. If possible answer for USA and UK
A: Why would you want your boobs removed?
The waiting times. Who knows. But i would say the usa is quicker as the NHS is damn slow.
Q: what can you do to prevent cancer from returning after prostatectomy?
A: Get checked more often!!!!!
Q: how long before erectile function returns after prostatectomy?
it has been 1 year already and results are not good
i am age 57
A: You did not say if you have other medical problems that would contribute to ED or if you had erectile dysfunction BEFORE the prostatectomy. The rate is 40 to 50% return of some kind of function within a year. However, there are a lot of factors to consider including what kind of prostatectomy you had, etc. You also did not say if you have tried anything for this: medications, shots, etc.
There is hope...you can start a penile rehabilitation program, which actually should have been done about three months or so after the prostatectomy but this is a relatively recent development. The doctors I work for use a combination of a vacuum constriction device (commonly known as a penile pump) and Cialis 10 mg on Tuesday and 20 mg on Friday. The pump allows "stretching" of the penis so as not to lose any length and the Cialis to help with blood flow to the penis. As you know, an erection works on hydraulics (the blood has to fill the veins in the penis to cause it to become erect). You could also use something like Caverject (prostaglandin E1) as injections into the penis to achive an erection. However, if you cannot take any medication because of a heart condition, and the constriction device does not work, the last step is a penile prosthesis. You could do research on your own about all this stuff but your urologist is the one that should help you make the final decision based on your medical and surgical history and lifestyle.
Q: What are some successful solutions to incontinence after a radical prostatectomy?
From my grandfather!
For my grandfather...and incontinence means not controlling the urge to urinate, not deficate!
A: Using a condom catheter with a leg bag and/or using adult briefs until you gain some continence control may be helpful.
Q: When will normal urination return after a radical prostatectomy?
I had a radical prostatectomy on Jan 15, I still dont have full control of my bladder habits, and would like to hear from people who can tell me how much longer to expect having to wear pads and the like. I have improved a lot, but its still troublesome
A: This varies from person to person. My dad has never gained full bladder control back following his surgery 16 years ago. There are lots of options though if it doesn't fully come back so hang in there and if you don't get full control back you can discuss options to fix this with your urologist.
Q: does spontanious erection ever return after a prostatectomy?
A: Up to 80% of men experience erection problems after a prostatectomy. The nerves that control a man's ability to have an erection lie next to the prostate gland. They often are damaged or removed during surgery. In the months and years after surgery, most men who had erection problems after prostatectomy are able to regain their ability to have erections:
76% of men younger than 60
56% of men age 60 to 65
47% of men older than 65
Recovery depends on:
Whether the man was able to have an erection before surgery.
How the surgery affected the nerves that control erections.
How old the man was at the time of surgery.
Q: why is there bleeding after prostatectomy/?
my father was diagnosed with prostate cancer, and had prostatectomy to remove the prostate gland. at first he saw few drops of blood in his urine, his surgeon said it's normal, however now he sees more blood in his urines sometimes while urinating, his surgeon says it's normal. i would like to know why there is urinary bleeding (what causes it) and for how long is this gong to go on for/ please help, i need answers for my dad.
A: Honey, major surgery, which is what your Dad had, is a traumatic wound to the body.
He has had part of his body removed...seepage is normal.
Takes time to heal...lots of time...probably six months for most surgeries, a year for many.
If Doc says its normal then its normal.
If the bleeding increases, occurs when not urinating, then maybe Dad needs to see doc right away.
Tincture of time.
Hard to watch someone you love suffer, especially when its your Mum or Dad, it is scarey.
Try to relax a bit..dont upset Dad because you are upset.
He needs quiet rest and as little stress as possible.
Q: how good are penile prostheses for erectile dysfuncton after radical prostatectomy?

Q: After a prostatectomy I'm having indigestion?
It's been 4 weeks now. I was doing fine but last week I stopped having bowel movements for 3 days, terrible heartburn even after taking Zantac, waking up every hour and taking Rolaids. finally used some suppositories, got some relief. used a enema yesterday,, (sorry this is so graphic). had a decent BM this morning, but still don't feel normal, maybe things will work out but I guess I just wanted to hear some other opinions.
Thanks
I have been off pain medications for 3 weeks now and I love drinking water. I stay very hydrated. No antibiotocs or any other medication
A: If you are still on pain medications, they can cause these symptoms. Try drinking more water and, if possible, taking your pain medications less frequently.
Or best bet is to call your urologist, their staff should be more than willing to help answer any of your questions
Q: What is a normal PSA reading post prostatectomy?
I have heard that Normal is 0.00 after a prostatectomy. And if the numbers increase, that there is still cancer left in the body. My husband's is 0.30 It has been 6 years this next July that he had prostate removed, and it has increased this much. Is this considered aggressive?
A: Since prostate tissue is the only source of PSA, the post-prostatectomy levels should be near zero. However, there is some "noise" in the test, and the result may not be exactly zero. The most important thing to watch is not the level, but the trend. You didn't give any earlier test results. If the PSA level is trending upward over time, then there is cause for concern, and some further treatment may be appropriate -- I won't go into the specifics of what treatment might be selected, since I know nothing about your husband's age or condition, or whether the tumor had spread through the capsule of the prostate before his surgery.
Q: normal urine flow after prostatectomy?
A: Some dribbling may be there after prostatecotmy. However after TUR this may not be there.
Q: Does a rising PSA after a radical prostatectomy mean I have cancer?
A: Prostate cancer usually releases detectable increases in the level of prostate specific antigen (PSA) found in the blood. When a prostate cancer is resected, we expect the PSA value to fall dramatically. If it doesn't, thats concerning for the possibility of residual disease. Following that, serial determinations of PSA value can be used to screen for recurrence. Rising values after resection with curative intent should prompt re-investigation. Prostate cancer can spread to bone, and lesions in the bone can be detected with bone scan. Also, CT scanning of the abdomen and pelvis can be useful to find masses above about 5 millimeters in diameter. The importance of follow-up physical exam and evaluation cannot be over emphasized. The treatment for residual or reccurent disease may be surgery, radiation, hormone suppression, or a combination. Our best weapon in the fight against cancer is early detection. All interventions are more effective early rather than late.
