Q: how long does it take to recover from prostate cancer hormone treatment?
A: My husband had seeds implanted and radiation 2 years ago. The first 2 month were kind of hard as he had burning with his bowl movement . It will depends on which treatment you use and there are several . He is back to his old self now and just has yearly check ups. Good luck.
Q: Prostate Cancer. Side effect of hormone treatment is severe hot flushes. Anyone know of some way to ease them?
All the commononly reccommended treatments have been tried - sage in various forms, all the "womens' ailments remedies" including Evening Primrose . . .
All without any real easing of the severe discomfort experienced as often as four or five times an hour. Any really helpful suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks a lot.
A: I believe that the problem with the meducal industry us that they traet symptoms, and not cause.
I also believe that cancer is a whole body thing, and should be treated as such.
So, cleaning out the rest of the body will help solve the problems with the prostate.
If I was you, I would go through complete cleansing procedures for liver, kidney, gall bladder, and colon.
This the gives the body the strength to fight back and heal itself.

Q: What are effects of prolonged hormone therapy for treatment of prostate cancer, specifically seratonin levels.
A: Serotonin is not a hormone, it's a neurotransmitter located in the brain.
Estrogen is used for prostate cancer. Hot flashes are the most common side-effect.
Q: cyproterone, a female hormone used in the treatment of prostate cancer. Anyone used this drug?
I would be particular interested if anyone diagnosed bipolar has been prescribed the drug
A: Carcinoma, prostatic (treatment, palliative)—Cyproterone is indicated for the palliative treatment of patients with advanced prostatic carcinoma, that's the only disease it's approved for, however, it is not available commercially in the states.
It is also used in Europe for transgender surgeries...male to female.
Q: What is the prognosis for a recurrence of prostate cancer being treated with hormone therapy?
My husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer 5 years ago and had radiotherapy after which he was ok until early this year when his PSA started to rise. It is now 16 and he has been advised to go on permanent hormone treatment. The doctor didn't tell us how likely this was to work and how long for. He is 63. Does anyone here know anything about it.
A: I’m not sure what you mean by “work”. I assume you know this will not cure him of the disease. Prostate cancer is typically slow growing and far more often than not managed very well. How aggressive it is, is determined by the Gleason score. This would have been determined at biopsy. Hormone therapy is standard care and works quite well at slowing the disease for long periods of time. It is not unusual to see men with prostate cancer for 15-20 and more. Whenever you realize you have an unanswered question call the doctor and ask over the phone they are used to it – it’s part of the job.
You may also be interested in knowing there is a prostate cancer vaccine due on the market by February. I can’t remember the name but I believe it is coming from a company in New Jersey. From what I was told it works very well, but it is also very expensive $30,000-$40,000. The patient’s tumor cells are used to make the vaccine so it is specific to the patient and their cancer. Over time, which fortunately you husband has, I suspect the price will come down. I also believe this type of vaccine will become available for different types of cancer. I work with a doctor who has had one for brain tumors in clinical trials for a few years now and it has been doing very well. Best wishes.
Q: Does hormone therapy for males suffering prostate cancer cause mental confusion?
My father has organic brain damage and moderate cognitive deficits after suffering a stroke in 2001. He has recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer. We are concerned that hormone therapy might increase his level of mental confusion. Is this a common side effect of hormone therapy to assist in treatment of prostate cancer? He is looking at radiation therapy and hormone therapy now.
A: No, it could actually help your cognitive abilities. Men are hardwired a weird way, and we actually need testosterone at certain points in our lives, not having the testosterone making organs, you need to substitute. I feel this would be his best bet to actually keep his sanity.
Consult with his doctor. They will tell u the truth seeing as how they see it every day.
I hope this helped!
Q: what is the outcome of stage T4 prostate cancer with hormone treatments?
A: It really depends on several factors, including:
age
general health condition
PSA levels
PSA velocity (amount PSA has gone up recently)
free PSA
How well hormone treatments will work
Very difficult to tell with limited information. I would suggest you research this some more.
Q: Is it permisable or wise to donate blood while your are being treated for prostate cancer?
I have prostate cancer and my treatment is: Hormone Therapy and External Beam Radiation. Is my blood OK to use for what ever purposes blood banks use it?
I can't help any other way at the moment and wish to continue helping others. Prior to my cancer I would do volunteer work. Now I am too tired to do the physical work I used to do. Even driving my car has been too much.
Thank you everyone, it was so silly of me to think I could donate.
A: Blood banks must follow Food & Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines. Contact your area blood bank with this question.
Regarding the use of donated blood: By FDA regulations, if you are paid to donate plasma (this process is called plasmapheresis), this plasma is not transfused into human beings. The companies you donate to will sell the plasma to research companies and drug manufacturers.
You do not mention how long you have been receiving your radiation therapy. Your oncologist should be able to instruct you regarding fatigue--what causes it, how long it will last, what can be done to address it so you may become active again. You are a very unselfish, empathetic person to be still thinking of others in your own times of hardship--bless you.
Please talk to your oncologist. I hope your cancer is treated successfully!
Q: Has any study shown that the hormone Zoladex completely wipes out Prostate cancer?
I am 65 with Stage IV prostate cancer that doctors said is aggressive and has metastasized to the lumbar bone. I was given up to two years to take Zoladex hormone shot every three months to suppress the cancer. After that, the next recommended treatment is chemotherapy.
Any comments the on basic question or the recommended treatment?
A: I am 67 and have had Prostate Cancer. My doctor has a very high success rate here in Chicago. He is an Oncologist as well as a Urologist. Operations and "Seeds" don't seem to wotk too well. His treatments do. I wish there was some way to communicate. He is really very good. He cured me.
Q: I am looking for a natural treatment to decrease Testosterone levels for prostate cancer.?
My father has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Because of his age, he is not a candidate for surgery. So his local Dr has started him on hormone therapy to decrease the levels of testosterone. He gave him a hormone shot to be repeated every 4 months, plus ordered a prescription which will costs over $500.00 per month. My father does not have prescription coverage with Medicare, only the VA covers medicine, but only if he sees a VA doctor, which is very far away. He, of course, is on a fixed income so he cannot afford $500 per month. We are making an appointment to go to the VA. In the meantime, does anyone know of any all natural supplement or treatment that can assist in the lowering of testosterone levels? Any information would be greatly appreciated.
A: Your father's cancer may be very treatable depending on his Gleason score, PSA doubling rate and his general health. If your father is in good health (excepting the cancer), then hormone therapy may not be a good choice. It will make him feel tired, cause osteoporosis, and weaken him by causing him to lose lean muscle. You may get better value for your money by seeing a real prostate cancer doctor. That being said, here is an answer to your specific question.
There are several natural products on the market which claim to control prostate cancer (PC). Most of these lower testosterone somewhat. If your father has not had much androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), and he has a clear bone scan, then he might try one of these products. The best of these products Medpro's prostasol from Holland and Medpro's PC SPES are expensive and hard to get shipped to the US (each cost $105 for just 60 capsules and you must take 9 a day to begin with).
There are other cheaper prostasols sold by other companies (eg Dr Donsbach), but these are not as potent. They may work for your dad. There is a product Isoprost made by Pure Prescriptions. These cost $60-70 per 90 tablets. The daily dosage is 4 tablets per day; so you could get by with two bottles per month. Compliance would be an issue, since you must take the tablets at the right time of day and (I think) between meals.
Besides the "side effects" mentioned above, ADT is in general not a good idea because the PC cells generally adapt to a low testosterone environment and becomes untreatable. The herbal remedies often continue to work indefinitely: that is, the PC cells do NOT develop resistance.
It is hard to give you better advice, since you haven't included enough information about your father's case. If you want more information feel free to email me.
BTW, it is likely that a new prostate cancer vaccine PROVENGE which is likely to be approved by the FDA. May 15th is the review date. If your father has a cancer which expresses Prostatic Acid Phosphatase (PAP), then he might try that. It is a one-time treatment which may help his immune system to recognize and eliminate some of his cancer cells.
Best of luck.

Q: anti-testosterone hormone can it increase blood-pressure?
taking anti testosterone hormone injection for prostate cancer treatment prior to radiation therapy, will this cause high blood pressure readings.
A: I would think not, but all drugs are different.
Get the name of the drug and look it up. In any good reference, common side effects will be listed.
Q: For men who have had hormone Therapy for cancer, HELP!?
I have advanced prostate cancer and have completed my external beam radiation, both full pelvic treatment and boost targeting the prostate only.
I have had my second hormone shot, every three months, and can't get a straight answer out of either my Urologist or Oncologist. I have hot flashes, as most do, and chills, but my problem is the stickyness. I feel sticky, I feel that I have an odor, my wife insists I don't, and if I lick my fingers, as you might as if you are dealing cards, my fingers stick togeather.
I see my GP next week, should I ask him to send me to OB/GYN? I know that sounds silly, a man going to one, but no one else has an answer. Maybe someone who deals with womens problems may have the answer.
Have you had this problem? How did you deal with it?
If I'm correct the hormones women take for breast cancer are different than what men take for prostate cancer.
I'm still looking for answers from men taking hormone therapy for prostate cancer.
I'll extend this to see if any answer.
Thank you everyone, I went to my G.P. yesterday and he informed me that my reaction to the hormone shots, Trelstar LA is normal and it will go away when I am taken off hormone therapy.
Thanks again
A: Hello,
I have been on Lupron for the past three years and on Casodex for the past two years. I definitely understand the hot flashes, chills and random pain. I haven't felt the stickiness. My family Doctor is a woman and when asked how I was doing I mentioned my nipples hurt. She stated that I had very little Testosterone left in my body so my Estrogen levels are elevated in relation. She stated her nipples hurt also so join the club. It probably couldn't hurt to get the opinion of someone who deals with Women's problems. The problem I have had with the medication is I now have excessively dry skin, am allergic to most soaps and body washes, and the only Stickiness seems to be in the groin area where the thighs meet the hips. Almost like Jock itch.
Good luck and hopefully the Doctor will have another idea.

Q: My Dad has just been diagnosed with Prostate Cancer which has reached his Lymph nodes/glands but not bones.?
He had a blood test that showed a PSA level of 87!! The MRI showed the cancer is in the surrounding Lymph tissue but the bone scan was clear. He has been given hormone treatment and told surgery is not possible and has an appt to see radiotherapy dept. Has anyone got any experience of this especially with such a high PSA result?
A: A PSA of 87actually isn't a horrible number for someone who has just been diagnosed. Radiation, horemonal treatment, and possibly chemotherapy will definitley help him out. Prostate cancer, especially when caught this early, doesn't have to be a death sentence.
It does require a lot of attention, though. Following the treatment schedule is very important. Follow up is crucial. Routine exams, labs, etc.
I hope he does well. What he needs right now is your support. Not your worry.
Q: Prostate Cancer Prognosis after radical prostectomy that left micro cells. When I am 80 dont want pain.?
I had a aggressive cancer grow in my prostate. The prostate was removed in surgery, but four or five years later a doctor found a PSA level of 11. He convinced me to go on Lupron (sp?) which is a hormone to get rid of all testosterone in body and cut off food supply to any microscopic cancer cells in my body. Several tests have shown no sign of cancer cells before or after the every-three month injections began and PSA went down from 11 to 3.
Now, the doc sort of casually mentioned that score is good, but the hormone treatment only works for 10 years. After leaving the office, I thought, this guy just gave me eight years to live. Now that is not like being told you have a month to live like in the movies, but it is not too long.
What happens then? Does prostate cancer start growing all over my body? In the bones? Will it require chemo and radiation and will I have extreme pain from this cancer if it gets in the bones? That is what I am wondering and wondering how to end it all
A: .. I had prostate cancer in 2005 and had Proton Radiation to cure the cancer.. Proton Radiation has no side effects and a 90% cure rate.. It has no pain or any thing.. I was not sick one single day during or after my treatments.. Proton Radiation is very different from conventional radiation... in that 90 % of the treatment energy is released exactly at the point needing to be treated.. therefore other tissues and organs are not damaged.. there fore you have no side effects.. When I was getting my treatments several people were there getting Proton Radiation who had had surgery and been on lupron.. and several were in their 80s I think Proton Radiation is the very best Prostate cancer treatment available..
There is a website that tells about Proton Radiaton.. it is called PROTON BOB..(BOB stands for brotherhood of the balloon) Go to the website and be sure and read Patient Testiamonials.. from former patients.. you will see what I am talking about.. My first doctor wanted to give me lupron also.. said I could live 10 years and that it had no side effects.. that was a lie I started having hot flashes real fast.. I met one fellow when I was having my treatments and he had been taking lupron for 7-8 years and it caused him to walk all bent over... he said.. ostioprosis ... I think said He was 85-86 and other wise in good health... There is also a new book out called YOU CAN BEAT PROSTATE CANCER, written by Robert J. Marckini.. a prostate cancer survivor.. it is great any one with prostate cancer should have it.. It can be purchased at the Proton Bob website, barnes and noble etc..If you are in good health other than the prostate cancer, personally I would sure consider Proton Radiation.. Medicare pays for it.. I took my treatments at Loma Linda Universty Medical Center.. however it is now offerded at 4-5 other locations in the US.. MD Anderson in houston just opened a facility for it.. Lots of doctors dont recommend it because they still think it is experimental, dont know about it, dont understand it.. or it just a pure money thing.. If they dont treat you the way they know how and send you some place else, they dont make any money for the Mercedes payment.. That was the case with the one who wanted to give me Lupron.. I later found out that was the only treatment he used.. was all he knew!!! and he made money selling the lupron.. sad deal... Id be willing to bet if you could have Proton Radiation.. you will be fine.. my psa is now.12.. thats point one three...go to the PROTON BOB website..read it.. especially the Patient Testimonial section.. If you have any questions.. please feel free to email me here on yahoo questions.. I allow emails.. I will even be glad to call and talk to you about my Proton Radiation experiece.. dont throw in the dang towell yet... !!! have a great day. Also I met guys who had PSAs of 50-100 and were cured with Proton Radiaton.... You can probably find some who had that sort of PSAs on the Proton Bob website... Proton Radiation cures the cancer.. and lupron sort of puts it on hold for a while.. hope I have helped.. contact me if you have questions.. again have a good day I read your question again.. I thought you were in your 80s now but your not..man you need Proton Radiation and get your problem taken care of.. If you can get it.. its like being on a 9-10 week vacation.. plus just remember 90% cure rate and little to NO side effects.. its the only way as far as im concerned..
Q: Prostate cancer survival with advanced stages.?
I have just been diognosed with prostate cancer. My urologists recommended treatment is: radiation, implant radioactive seeds and hormone therapy. Reason for this as the only treatment is: aggressive high grade cancer, Gleason's combined score 9 (4+5). perineul invasive adenocarcinoma is present.
My PSA has been 4.2+ for several years. I am now 66 years old & I do not understand why a biopsy was not done before now. I trusted the doctors to make informed decisions for me.
The main reason I'm asking is I'm a caregiver for my wife who has M.S.
What are the survival rates for this cancer in this stage????
A: Sorry for your situation. I'm going to be blunt--if you rely on your oncologist to save you, you are between a rock and a hard place. He can't do anything for you, except make you weaker--but there's a lot you can do for yourself.
Five hundred years ago, people said the world was flat. Today, people say that if the FDA and AMA haven't blessed something, it can't be real good. Well, here's something I know to be real AND good. It's a little different take on cancer treatment--
In 1990, I had Hodgkin's Lymphoma, stage 3-B, but I've survived. My doctors were great people, but they were limited to surgery, chemo and radiation by profitable AMA treatment policy. During the year in treatment, I started learning about alternative medicine. I'm a retired engineer, and this is what I've pieced together--our IMMUNE SYSTEMS become weakened by poor nutrition, lack of exercise and reduced oxygen. Once that happens, our body becomes vulnerable to common STRESSORS. Stressors can be environmental, like viruses, heavy metals, pesticides, food additives, electromagnetic waves or pollution. They can be internal things like emotional or job stress, or poisonous people in our lives. Aging is also a contributing factor. So this means:
WEAK IMMUNE SYSTEM + STRESSORS = DISEASE (cancer, diabetes, heart disease, etc.)
Our bodies have 60 trillion--yes, trillion--cells, and there are always some mutating into cancer cells, but a healthy immune system kills them before they have a chance to get a foothold in the body.
It takes a LONG time, usually, or a high level of stressors, to weaken the immune system to the point where it won't do its job, but once cancer has formed, it will generally spread rapidly.
THIS IS IMPORTANT! There are ways to BEAT cancer that are currently being used in Europe and around the world, and there are some great books on the subject. I know because I've read about 50 of them from cover to cover. Here's a list of the best ones. Some are out of print and getting hard to find--
"The Cure for All Cancers", ISBN 0963632825
"The Cure for All Advanced Cancers", ISBN 1890035165
"A Cancer Therapy", ISBN 0882681052
"Oxygen Therapies", ISBN 0962052701
"Hydrogen Peroxide--Medical Miracle", ISBN 1885236077
"The Natural Cure for Cancer--Germanium", ISBN 0533071410
"Killing Cancer", ISBN 0705000966
"Natural Cures 'They' Don't Want You to Know About", ISBN 0975599518
I know of people whose cancer has 'spontaneously remitted' (WENT AWAY for no known reason) AFTER they went on programs of herbs and nutrition to restart their immune systems.
You and your family must look out for yourselves to stand a chance of being healthy. This is not a joke, and I'm not selling anything--just trying to help.
I am using the things I learned in those books right now to fight off a second infestation of cancer. I've been at it for over a year now, and think I'm going to make it. Use what works for you, and pass on your success. Best of luck.
