Q: prostate cancer rising psa?going elsewhere?
A: Yes the psa rising shows that the tumour is still growing, but going elsewhere is very difficult to establish, since all cancers grow at different rates.
My dads was caught too late, his psa is currently at 70, but it has been as high as 125, but it recently came down after a dose of radiotherapy.
People who have prostate cancer can live for 5,10,15 or who knows, its a type of cancer that is very slow growing, and can be kept at bay with lots of different medication.
My dad is currently being a guinea pig for a new cancer drug, so fingerscrossed - it could one day be the new miracle cure.
a really good website with a forum that lots of men who have prostate cancer post to is www.prostate-cancer.org.uk/
Q: what causes rise in psa index after significant fall post testes removal surgery for prostate cancer?
A: recurrence sorry
Q: Having a PSA of 85, what are the chances of having progressed prostate cancer?
A: Immediately find yourself a urologist, and have a prostate biopsy. The chances of Prostate Cancer with a confirmed PSA of this magnitude are extremely high! If you value your time remaining on this earth, please do this.
From the "PSA Rising" site: (http://www.psa-rising.com/prostatecancer/psa-test.htm)
"Elevated PSA levels in a man who has never been treated for prostate cancer may be a sign of any prostate problem. PSA rise may indicate prostatitis (infection). It may indicate benign growth or swelling of the prostate (BPH). Or it may indicate prostate cancer.
PSA is made in the prostate. It is measured in nanograms per milliliter of blood. Normally, PSA levels in the blood remain very low. Any hurt to or injury of the normal prostate, such as from inflammation caused by infection, may cause more PSA to leak into the bloodstream.
In the past, most doctors considered PSA values below 4.0 ng/ml as normal. However, recent research found prostate cancer in men with PSA levels below 4.0 ng/ml. Many doctors are now using the following ranges, with some variation:
0 to 2.5 ng/ml is low
2.6 to 10 ng/ml is slightly to moderately elevated
10 to 19.9 ng/ml is moderately elevated
20 ng/ml or more is significantly elevated
This new approach reflects the fact that relatively low PSA levels in the blood may mask some aggressive prostate cancers.
Rate of PSA over time is a key factor in diagnosing prostate cancer. This is sometimes called PSA velocity and sometimes calculated as "PSA doubling time." In men with prostate cancer, tumor doubling time ranges from a month or two to over 12 or 15 years. PSA doubling time is a pretty reliable indicator of cancer cell doubling although not a sufficient indicator without biopsy and imaging scans."
Q: I have prostate cancer with a PSA of 2.8 is that good?
A: I think that is not bad at all. My husband was diagnosed with pc over 6 years ago. His psa was 145.3 at that time. You will do great, especially since they are making great progress in this area of medicine.
Q: Does a high PSA score mean one has prostate cancer? If not, how does one resolve the high PSA score?
A: Not all high PSA results mean cancer! Sometimes you can't resolve it..I have a friend that has a reading of 6.5 and has been as high as 9...He has had it for several years gets checked at least 2 times a year and no change..Within the last 2 days there was news out concerning this vary topic..bottom line only a byop. can determine. also an enlarged prostate doesn't mean cancer either..Just keep hanging with the Doctor and insist on semi annual checks both via blood and finger wave..If the Dr. says everything ok then it's ok..But if you still feel uncomfortable then go to another Doctor Specialist.. You can also ask for a byop..to either confirm your fears or negate them..Good Luck..Remember YOU are in charge of your own health not your Doctor..So make yourself feel good...
Q: i have a psa of 4.7 what are my chances thati have prostate cancer?
A: The PSA test is best used when it is trended over time. There is no normal PSA level. All the PSA level does is provide an indication of the risk of cancer. Another blood test that is finding more acceptance is Free PSA.
Your doctor should have done a DRE (digital rectal exam - sorry, does not involve computers!). If he suspects cancer, the next option is usually a biopsy.
Q: PSA (prostate-specific antigen)?
Cancer in the prostate gland will cause PSA to be expelled into the bloodstream. How could a researcher devise a test to detect this prostate-specific protease in the lab?
A: Usually a diagnostic tool called Enzyme-Linked-ImmunoSorbent Assay (ELISA) is used to detect and to measure specific antigens. How this works and about the history of this very important method you will find in:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enzyme-linked_immunosorbent_assay
Q: what can I do to fight a rising PSA with out a prostate?
Cancer survivor who had a radical prostectimy in 99 and fought off a rising psa with chemo in 2003. Psa was rising very slowly until recently then spiked from 1.4 to 2.9 in a short period of time. I had been on Licopene and Soy but ran out of soy 2 months ago and didn't purchase a refill. Now I have doubled the soy dosage to 1500 mg a day half in the morning and half at night. I have started taking Q-sorb coenzyme Q-10 50mg twio with a meal. What else can I do to fight the rising PSA?
A: My step father has successfully beaten prostate cancer with a drink called Dr Redds Ginger punch. I know this sounds over simple, however, university tests here in Australia have proved that it kills all 3 types of prostate cancer in invitro testing. We know this works! For more info go to www.drredds.com.au good luck!
Q: does proscar kill prostate cancer?
had prostate removed & psa rising..
Taking lupron & casodex still rising
will adding proscar help lower PSA
A: I"m a nurse for a urologist and while Proscar cuts the PSA in half on paper, its actually a false reading. For patients on Proscar we multiply there PSA by two to get a true reading. You need to talk to your doctor to see what other options are avaliable to you. Good luck.
Q: Prostate Cancer question - for doctors?
My partner has had prostate cancer for 7 years. He takes hormone tablets. His psa has risen from a fairly steady 15-16 to 24. He has just been for bone and abdomen scans but results not until Monday. His doctor has said not to worry but I have been trying to find out if this level of increase is likely to be due to the cancer spreading to other parts of the body. I really have no idea what level of psa would indicate this. Any knowledge or experience would be very helpful and help me to prepare for what to expect.
Thank you
A: Well, as others have said before prostate cancer is different from patient to patient. In general the PSA levels can increase even in men with no cancer at all!!! PSA is only one way to monitor the enlargement of the prostrate. By the sound of it your partner has a small, slow growing tumour which is receptive to hormone therapy and thus unlikely to spread. Having said that there is always a possibility.
Hope everything is OK... all you can do really is wait for the test results.
Best of luck

Q: just dig with prostate cancer, anyone had the surgery?
had psa and Dr said I have in all prostate and possible outside ?wants to do surgery - I am heart
patient and I am 65 yrs old . I also had biopsy 6 out of 8 had cancer 3X3=6 gleason
A: I had the surgery 4 years ago when I was 51. There is a much more advanced version now though. It is laproscopic. They don't cut you open like they did me. My doctor in Orange County is now doing it and says he'll never go back. I mentor patients with prostate cancer and the ones who have had the new surgery swear by it. Most of them are in their 60's. Looks like a 3 week recovery instead of 6.
I am happy with the surgery, although I have not regained 100% of erectile function. Only about 1/3 of patients ever regain 100% function. I have absolutely no incontinence though. I think that is a thing of the past for most patients.
Try to have the laprascopic method done, but in any event, make sure your surgeon is expert (and can prove it) at nerve sparing.
Q: It would spread rapidly if cut is made in the cancer. How far is it true? If so biopsy would work same way?
My PSA (total) is 59.6 and doctor says I am suffering form prostate cancer and advises me to have biopsy test to ascertain its degree/stage for deciding mode of treatment. But there is notion that if cut is made in cancer it spreads like fire. Is there any truth in it?
A: That is a myth. Some people believe that if the cancer is exposed to air it spreads. There are lots of rumors.
Cancer is constantly putting off cells that may stick in another place in your body.
Cutting it either with the biopsy or surgery is necessary, and you need to take care of this as soon as possible.
Prostate cancer is curable if detected and treated early, if not it is fatal.
Q: Prostate Cancer Staging and question.?
Alright was talking with someone about prostate cancer they got told over the phone after getting a biopsy done that they had prostate cancer here is what they told me. They had ten core samples taken from the prostate one out of the ten core samples came back with a 50% of it having cancer a Gleason score of 7 there PSA score was below 10 also, but I am wondering how bad this can be if only one core sample came back positive? Its a very good person i my life and kinda curious and looking for more information so any help can be useful, I sppouse the fact only one core sample came back postive is a good thing or is that a bad thing given the ranking they gave the sample?
A: I don't have all the information, but your friend has 60-70% chance of having disease confined to prostate, assuming the following:
He doesn't have a palpable prostate nodule, only an elevated PSA; he is 60-70 years old, and his PSA is between 5 and 10. He can go to the below website which has a calculator to help figure out chances it is all in prostate or could be more advanced, which will help in decision-making.
Blessings
Q: Can you help with this question about prostate cancer and pomegranate juice?
I have a strong family history of prostate cancer (father & older brother). I am now over 65 and my PSA tests have remained at normal levels I have that test and a rectal exam by a urologist done annually. I've heard recently that pomegranate juice may be of value in treating men wiith prostate cancer whose cancer is still progressing despite radiation and/or hormonal therapy. What I'd like to know is this:
(1) Is there any evidence that it might help in preventing or delaying onset of the disease? and
(2) Is there any indication it could interfere with early diagnosis by skewing the PSA test?
A: Yes I have also heard Pomegranate juice is effective to prevent prostrate cancer due to is medicinal values. But it does not cure the disease already set in. Neither it will give any adverse indication in the Prostate specific antigen test conducted. this was confirmed to me by my Oncologist friend.
Secondly while i appreciate you are taking all precautions to contain this disease, I request you not to have fear of getting it. If you are destined for something you will get it otherwise not. Take and think everything on positive note. Nothing will happen. Best of Luck
